Reupholstered sofas are just like regular couches - difficult to clean, while slipcovers can easily be removed from your furniture and put in the washing machine.  Reupholstered furniture needs to be steam cleaned, and in a worst case situation will be forever ruined if the stain is bad enough.  Slipcovers on the other hand are easy to clean and if they get permanently stained or damaged, you can order a brand new slipcover to replace the old one.
